So. Some comments about the Oscars. Seriously, does Clint Eastwood just buy out the Academy every fucking year? Last year his mediocre cop flick Mystic River had Sean Penn beat out the FAR superior Bill Murray. This year he somehow again won over with what I'm sure will be a movie I hate.

Maybe I am being too harsh on a movie I've not seen but the fact of the matter is that every movie I've seen that has been directed by Clint Eastwood or had Clint Eastwood starring in, I've disliked. They are all extremely unoriginal ideas with the same rough and tough and down and out characters that almost ALWAYS have some level of crime in them.

Just see Blood Work, True Crime, Absolute Power, A Perfect World, In the Line of Fire, Unforgiven, The Rookie, White Hunter Black Heart, The Dead Pool, Heartbreak Ridge, City Heat, Sudden Impact, The Enforcer...yadda yadda yadda. Hell, half the god damned credits list his characters name with "Inspector", "Lieutenant", "Chief", or some other police or military name in mind. And the others have him basically as a retired inspector or chief etc...His films have as much variety as the number of musical guests at the Oscars tonight - Beyonce, Beyonce, Beyonce and Beyonce.

That is another beef I have tonight. Beyonce. What the HELL. Sure she's talented, she can sing better than me but there are three things I'd like to point out:
1) Her French is awful, whoever decided she should sing that song in French should be fired.
2) Compared to the guy she did the duet with (I cant remember his name for the life of me) she sounded awful. He was perfectly in key and has a much better singing voice than her, and it showed.
3) Why on EARTH the original performers weren't singing their songs is beyond me. That goes for Antonia Banderas singing the winning Spanish song. (although I thought he did a good job).

Anyway
I havent studied for my test tomorrow. I am pretty screwed now but hey, the oscars are fun to watch...even though the people I always want to win (Thomas Haden Church, Kate Winslet, Virginia Madsen - okay yah Jamie Foxx won - and Martin Scorsese) don't.

Chilling at school. Just said bye to Stella, Andy S., and Sonja. We sat and ate toblerone chocolates, peanuts, and pitas. Earlier today, Andy and I wrote our musical masterpiece. It was an eclectic mix of drums and horns. It was a work of sophistication and beauty matched only by the composers' intelligence and good looks. Ask Paul.

"I coulda got away with it, if it wasn't for you meddlin kids!"

I'm killing time before a meeting at 6pm regarding performances for the arts festival. They are holding auditions and I figure I want to rock out and make a fool of myself on stage. If I threw in a few crotch grabs, windmills, wardrobe malfunctions, and many a pelvic thrust, I should be able to garner some applause (if not steal the show). Seriously though, they had some cool performances last year, so check it out and support your fellow artsy fartsy students.

So I'm in LA again. Two things. This keyboard BLOWS again. And lemme tell you, coming from ANY country other than Canada into this sesspit is HELL. It took me ONE HOUR to fucking clear customs...AND I'm a Canuck so they treated me like royalty compared to most AND I'm just in fucking TRANSIT here. God all mighty. HELL ON EARTH. HATE LAX!!! And the creepy guys selling me books with pretend bags for "travel" freak me out. Oddly enough though, I can see Siddiq doing exactly the same...

Anyway, for nine days of New Zealand, I have EIGHT FULL CDS OF PHOTOS. That is like 1300 photos people.

And guess who is bringin home duty free Baileys people! Twwwoooo bottles.

BOO YA GONNA BE BACK HOME SOON! GO 29 HOURS IN TRANSIT!

So I am on day four of the NZ trip right now. That blasted LA connection apparently posted my last one twice. Fucking LA. Anyway yah. I've seen Christchurch, which we landed in at 7:00am with mist across the city and the sun rising with mountains in the background (that was quite the welcome) and then promptly went to Akaroa to see my first real mountains up close and tooooo personal. God DAMN is driving here every scary at times. They don't believe in guard rails apparently.

Wtf? Jodie and Mills live here? I did not know that. Sorry though folks, I am entirely spending my time here in the South Island. My rents are going to the North after I leave though. But yah...tell me you have hook ups in Te Anau...PLEASE. The daytimes here are BEAUTIFUL. Beyond worldly expression. But the night is UNBELIEVABLY DRAB. Noooooo one our age lives down here. And noooo one that is even close does anything at night.

But yah. I have seen Mount Cook on a sunny day, driven up mountain roads, been scared shitless going up a gondola SUPER high in Queenstown. Eaten quite kingly, and just overall had one HELL of a time. Today we went on a helicopter ride to a mountain 5000ft up next to a tarn (a glacially formed lake). In fact we did that twice. The trip was basically the highlight of my life. No joke. Do it if you ever can. Te Anau is heaven on this earth. Just has a bad nightlife. ANd being with one's parents can be ultra dull when one is 22 years of age. More updates tomorrow after what I assume will be a HELL of a day in Milford Sound. It's 4:30am Monday there and 10:34pm Monday here. HA!

So. I am currently at LAX. I've been here for about...like...8 hours. Our flight was 6 hours. We were at the airport for at leat three hours before we took off. That adds up to a lot of hours.

Impressions of LA. It is smoggy. Noisy. Big. And not very friendly to vegetarians. Freaking hell, I ordered an appetizer of quesadillas, and I could barely finish it. My parents ordered full on entress. Andy - know how huge that thing of Nachos was at the Devils Harp? Yah, imagine more than that, for one person. My parents couldnt eat it at all. No wonder so many Americans are obese, they eat like 5lbs of food per meal. Insane.

Also insane. I am typing at this weird high speed terminal thingy, 25 cents per minute. And the keyboard BLOWS. I think they purpose designed it so that no one could type on the damned thing. GAH!

Anyway lots of love from LA. So far I pretty much don't care for it. But the hollywood sign is cool. And the multi-culturalism is nice to see too. Though I notice how so many of the shittiest jobs are held by Mexicans. That isnt too cool for them. Anyway, off I go to NZ in like...two more hours. And then a 13 hour flight. Gooooody. Hey no sleep for Paul!

I hate you stupid high speed terminal keyboard!!!

You're so money and you don't even know it!

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I am sure Brad already knew about this cuz I think they played the album...but I just heard none other than
William Shatner just cover Pulp's Common People. It was on the Edge no less. Absolutely stunning. Unbelievable. *insert superlatives here* haha, oh my. I needed that.

Waking up this morning sucked more than words could ever express. Turns out that last night my computer decided to damn near die trying to scan my hard drive for viruses cuz Bittorrent was running at the same time. So the ENTIRE fucking night I was waking up wondering what the fuck that incessant chattering noise was. It was my hard drive as it turns out. I think it was operating within normal limits but it certainly didn't help the sleep.

On the bright side I now have The Mars Volta's new album Frances the Mute, and My Bloody Valentine's 1991 classic, Loveless. I love the song Sometimes that graced the amazing soundtrack of the amazing film Lost in Translation, but had no clue at all that it belonged to an album that is over a decade old, and is apparently an absolute gem of an album.

Okay strange. I am sitting here typing when a Luis Guzman lookalike wearing a suit rather like in this photo walked past. In fact. It may or may not have BEEN Luis Guzman. It wasn't. But it was hilarious because he was hanging around the store and I asked if I could do anything for him - and he said he was waiting for someone. Then another suspicious suit guy looking like a beardless Luis Guzman showed up and the two of them took off hurriedly. More strange was the multitude of badges, tags, and other shit hanging from their necks suggesting some level of government law enforcement. Perhaps they are going to bust up the money laundering that CLEARLY goes down at the Navy. Seriously now, I am sure Drix can attest to the ridiculous quantities of money that flow through that store. Surely their low low everyday prices and big sales with amazing prices cannot possibly account for their daily bread.

This place is dead anyway.
Money baby!

Hrmm...so the U2 Vertigo tour has been announced. No Toronto date. I am hoping that will turn into "No Toronto date, yet." More annoyingly - every date they have in Europe is like..four or five days before we arrive in those cities. Except Munich, August 3rd. We aren't going to Munich - but it's close enough to Berlin and Prague that I am RIDICULOUSLY tempted to get a ticket to see them there. Anyone else from the Eurotrip group interested at all?

OSAP woes:

OSAP is officially out to destroy me. Before Christmas, my loan was stopped due to an over payment. Meaning I had to pay a certain amount before they were to issue my next loan. I paid the over payment. I then got a letter informing me that the receipt given to me for my payment was not considered official and the loan won't be processed until they saw a UofT stamp on the bill. The lady at the registrar photocopied the wrong side, the stamp was on the reverse side. On the next visit to the registrar they photocopy the wrong side again. I correct them and the loan is back on the road. I finally receive the loan documents yesterday and get the loan officer to handle and mail it back. My mother calls last night and informs me of yet another cheerful letter from the UofT Admissions and Awards office downtown. It appears my loan cannot be processed until I have given proof that I have been living away from home. Today I provided a photocopy of the rental agreement and a copy of the latest bank draft for Daniels. They never asked for this information during second and third year.

I have no doubt that they'll eventually ask for blood and urine samples. I have taken the liberty of sending them these samples in two plastic thermoses to stay ahead of the game.

I have gone through a barrage of red tape only to end up with another complication. It was a maze just finding out there was a loan over payment in the first place. OSAP directs you to the registrar's office at UTM, UTM redirects you downtown, the downtown office then provides the National Student Loans Center number, after calling them they point you back to OSAP's useless site which tells you to contact your registrar's office. Its a loop of insanity that results in flailing arms and stuttered curses.

I understand that the government should take measures to ensure these loans go out to those who need it. My problem is the run around and miscommunication between the institutions. I can't be pissed at any one person at the registrar's office because they aren't directly responsible for the bullshit. Being pissed at them would be a waste of my time.

"Do you attend school?"
"No, I attend the registrar's office."

So let's all do the OSAP dance, its kinda like the UTM dance. Just bend over and let your partner do the work.

"When I dip, you dip, we dip."
