Toronto! A bit smoggy don't you think? Still a very pretty thing to see when you are up and having fun concentrating on not crashing the plane. These photos were courtesy of Jeff, my flight instructor!

HAPPY PAUL DAY DAY!!! Happy bday Holmes!!!

Soooo...I flew my first solo flight today. My flight instructor was kind enough to rush a bit for me to do so on my birthday...not a bad frigging birthday present even though it was terrifying.

I had to wait a while to take off because no less than three aircraft came in one right after the other. And then I had something like three behind and one in front in the circuit when I went up. Made for some interesting traffic spacing dilemmas. So that was stressful. But I made the landing just fine, maybe a little to the left of the centreline, but I do that a lot. And by a little I mean like maybe one foot, so no one is gonna cry over it. But yah....was a really weird time. I would say I was more stressed by the traffic and making sure that I did all the procedures properly than I was with being by myself. You don't have enough time and can't spare enough concentration to worry bout that!

Anyway, fun fun times. This weekend let's celebrate people!

hendrix' banners always crack me up. it's just too bad that it's impossible to convince the kid to deliever me a pizza. i mean, really, is richmond hill THAT far away. personally, i just think he's lazy. or something.

the weekend was filled with some entertainment. saturday a bunch of us went to the queenshead for a party pete suggested. was pretty cool. an interesting crowd. definitely pretty rammed but not impossible to get drinks. sunday was lounging day. but there needs to be a laundry day in my near future.

stella's blog has been keeping me ammused. her link's on the left there, down abit. i'm too lazy to type the required html code to make a link. sue me.

and as another episode of Lost approaches, i gotta wonder, what the fuck is actually happening on that show.

anyway, more from bradtown later.
peace.

I meant to write this on Friday but I got sidetracked with that whole "night out" thing. Anyway, let me try to describe to you what I did on Friday at Brampton Flying Club. Currently I'm listening to Odyssey by Lovelife, as is found on Tom Middleton's spectacular The Sound of the Cosmos...if you can find it, it's an appropriate backdrop to what I am going to discuss.

On Wednesday I started flying what is called the circuit. The circuit is essentially the pattern that aircraft must fly in around an airport in order to structure and distance aircraft from one another. Think of it as a ringroad around the airport.

A typical circuit involves an aircraft taking off on whichever runway has them facing into the wind - this is called either the upwind or take-off leg of the circuit.

Once a pilot reaches 500ft above ground level (not to be confused with above sea level) they turn (typically - not always - depends on the airport, but doesn't change at that airport ever) 90 degrees to the left and continue climbing.
This is called the Crosswind leg.

As the aircraft reaches 1000ft AGL, they turn left 90 degrees again, and level out their climb. They are now on the downwind leg.

They continue parallel to the runway, and once they have reached a point that is roughly 45 degrees beyond the threshold (touchdown point) of the runway they turn left again 90 degrees, onto what is called the Base leg, and now descend so they are 500ft AGL by the time they turn once more in line with the runway.

The final leg is not surprisingly called the Final Leg. Big surprise eh? Here they descend to the runway and land!

And that is what I have now done about twenty times or more since Wednesday. You just go around over and over again. It sounds boring but it's excellent practice because you can correct mistakes you make shortly after having made them, in order to be able to rapidly advance your skills. What is MORE fun (and terrifying...) is that I've been landing with moderate crosswinds. Which means I have to do what's called a sideslip onto the runway. Which means I will tilt the wing of the aircraft into the wind, and yaw the nose to line up with the track of the runway, so I travel in a perfectly straight line, cept with my wing dipped low. It is a challenge, but I'm getting fairly good at it for a beginner.

Then there are the engine failures. Imagine yer flying along, and suddenly your flight instructor cuts the throttle and says "Engine failure, what ya gonna do?" Okay really now. That makes you sweat. haha. I've done it a few times. I am okay when he does it to me at the Base turn, that is simple, you just get to the runway you were about to turn to anyway. But then he did it to me just as I made my turn into the Downwind leg. Then I had to land on the other runway and drop 800ft of altitude in about maybe half a mile horizontally. I kid you not, I had the wing tilted well past 60 degrees to the left, the nose pointed down at around 20-30 degrees, and meanwhile I am throwing in full rudder, and plummeting to the ground at some horrendous rate, whilst trying to keep my speed at 65 knots. Suffice it to say I didn't make it. If it had been a real failure, I could have touched down and MAYBE been okay, but I didnt get down fast enough (weird paradox isnt it?) to have enough runway to stop safely, and probably would have run off the end of the runway in reality. But that's better than outright crashing!

Anyway, the entire process is more fun than anything else I've ever done in my life. I can't wait to take you all up on trips!

Recent accomplishments such as my lvl 20! Elementalist/Warrior have been overshadowed by the tragedy of yesterday's interview.

It couldn't be more obvious how desperate I was at my interview yesterday. I came overly prepared flipping papers and spoiling the presentation I made. It went alright... but man, the aroma of fresh grad must've turned into a stench after the first 10 minutes. The lady had a good laugh when I said I was trained with Dreamcast... when I meant to say Dreamweaver. Awesome. She was cool and seemed to understand where I was coming from.

I turned into a
bumbling idiot when I knew I could have rocked that position. The position was for Junior Web Coordinator, no design involved. I need to regroup and plan my next attack. Until then, pints tonight.

Wooo. Okay so I am listening to the new
Coheed and Cambria album entitled *big breath* Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness. Did you get that? It's called Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness. Yah. Long.

But oh my. I really enjoyed their debut Second Stage Turbine. I mean I loved it. Their second album was good, but was lacking as a solid effort I thought. Lots of good highlights but not really great as a whole work.

GAIBS4VOFFTTEOM (AHAHAHA) meanwhile, is back to front fucking just...awesome. And it's a rejuivenated sound that I can't even begin to knock. It's without doubt still Coheed and Cambria, but it sounds wicked. I love it to death. Go listen to it. Apollo I The Writing Writer, Ten Speed (of God's Blood and Burial) are my favs so far. Go out ye listeners and listen!

i didn't really get up to much this weekend. basically i was sick. which isn't a ton of fun, so i apologize to anyone that wanted me to go hang out with them. some things just can't be helped.

anyway, with no drinking to be done, jenn and i picked up the dvd set for the first season of Lost. and... we watched the whole thing. it's easily the stand-out drama from last year in my opinion. it has that whole 20 hour movie feeling that i wish more shows would attempt. the cast does a stellar job, and the plot keeps you guessing. i think i'm gonna be disappointed when they finally reveal "the monster". keeping things from the viewers eyes does such a great job of heightening the suspense. anyway. i realize i might be late to the party, but it's definitely worth watching, and the 2nd season begins on wednesday.

oh, and KNIBB HIGH FOOTBALL RULES!!

RAGING ALCOHOLIC BOY DRUNK REPORT:
Well boy howdy. What a weekend. Last weekend was pretty intense too, but I don't really need to post about that...cuz just about anyone that reads this website was there! Anyway, Friday night, went down to Enfields where the lovely Ariane works. It's a nice place, and definitely a higher class venue for those cocktail parties I know we all love to have.

Anyway, was there with the indomitable Eric Amodeo, his lovely gf Melissa, Marco, Jon, Shannon, Mike, and of course Marie! We all had fun chatting it up there, then hit up Club 107. I gotta tell you folks...Europe has warped my poor mind. How you ask? Well, simply put, hard rock, metal, and heavier alternative music just don't do it for me anymore. That isn't to say I don't love my hardcore and emo or screamo, but stuff like Metallica, et al., are just nooo good for me anymore. Give me trance or give me death at a club. I just CAN'T dance to Drowing Pool. Bleh. Mosh, sure, but not dance. Anyway, that isn't to say I didn't have a good time! Was quite plesant, but I had to duck out early cuz I was just plain exhausted.

Moving on to Saturday. What DIDN'T I do? Not much! Ate at
Fresh - which if you haven't been to, I highly recommend. There is one just up the street from Andy and Brad's place, also one nearby the Green Room on Bloor, and a couple others. Delicious vegetarian food, and its great even if you aren't a veggie (which I'm not anymore...). Then I went to see The Brothers Grimm with Jesse. It's a so-so movie. The imagination of it is fantastic, and the story on the whole was really good, and the start and ending were awesome. But in the middle, the lack of continuity and dislocated nature of the film really, really hampered the progress of the film.

Then I saw Crash. I think Brad posted about that when he and Andy saw it, but just to recap - SEE IT. That film shows me that Hollywood still has hope and isn't just producing shite movies. I was VERY VERY impressed. It's unbelievably powerful.

Then I went to South Side Louis' with Jesse, Jessica, and Sonja! And Adam met up with us! We drank a lot! I had a lot of martinis, I hit Jesse in the face a couple times, and he put me in a rather debilitating choke-hold. Wasn't pleasant! But all in good fun.

And then today I met up with Kien for the first time since we parted ways in Scotland! Was good to see him, and had fantastic food at this Japanese restaurant. I had a whole freaking fish served to me, head and all. Was delicious! But WAY more food than even I could consume.

All in all, very good weekend. Expensive again though, haha I must stop that. Till next time kids!

The jobhunt officially sucks. I'm calling these employers sounding like the biggest pansy. You know when you call that girl you like for the very first time? It's like that.

"Uhhh, hi... uh yea... ummm..."

Bah, dumped before you get a chance. This is a tidbit from a cover letter I sent earlier this week:

I believe I can contribute to the Naked Broadcasting Network Inc. with my education and skills in content creation.

Hahaha at least there's humor in some of the postings I've found. I have 3 resumes on the go, one for general labour, one for graphic related, and one for HR. The HR generalist and recruiting positions don't sound too bad at all. They also look like they have the most opportunity for advancement. Get hired to hire others, sounds like fun.

Imma play Broken Social Scene and ride into the sunset on my
donkey.

Have you guys seen Tony the Tiger lately? The fucker is on roids.

way before, before, after

Ok so the change isn't so drastic, I swear to you they beefed up his look. His shoulders are broader and his jawline is slightly squarer. If you think I'm crazy, go to his site and listen to his voice (click his name and pick the baseball ad). It is noticably deeper. I thought I could take him before, but if I ran into him now I think I'd be careful not to piss him off. Watch, in like a year his tail will fall off.

I still think he's GRRrrr-reat!!!

METAR CYYZ 121800Z 28013G27KT 6SM HZ FEW055 31/17 A3007 RMK CF1
SLP180

BOOOOOO.

See I'm already learning stuff! That above is a METAR, or METeorological Aerodrome Report. CYYZ is the aerodrome designator for Toronto Pearson International....the first two numbers mean it's the twelfth day of the month, the next four and the Z stand for 1800 Zulu time, which is about 1400 EST. 280 means the wind is coming from 280 degrees or west-northwest and it's 13 knots with gusts up to 27 knots.

The visibility is 6 statute miles (as opposed to nautical miles, which are often used in aviation), and has HAZE...the haze is why I am saying boo. It restricts visibility to less than the reported visibility because while you might be able to see six miles, you can't really tell what you are looking at because it's just a soup. So I got grounded today. Anyway then FEW means few clouds at 5500ft, temperature of 31 with a dewpoint 17, the altimeter should be set to 30.07 HG (inches of mercury) - this allows a pilot to correctly adjust the altimeter in the plane to read altitude correctly based on pressure. The final remark (RMK) I have to admit I had to look up, it means cumulus fractus clouds with 1/8th coverage (of the sky...), cumulus fractus clouds are apparently a bad sign, and can be linked to rain. Finally, SLP180 means the Sea Level Pressure is 1018.0 hPa. (Hecto-Pascals)

So there you have it. Now you can read METARs from
NAV Canada's aviation weather reporting website! Isn't that exciting???

haha sooo today, I had my flight, but it turned out a little out of the ordinary. It was a fantastic day for flying despite early rain. The cold front that came through brought a clear horizon (as opposed to the stew of yesterday), scattered clouds, and denser air (dense air is good for flying). I was doing really well with everything, felt much more confident than the day before...and...
Paul: *sniff* *sniff* "What's that sme..."
Jeff (Flight instructor): "Hrmm and it seems we have an electrical fire."

And so with that I glance down and see that the landing light and taxi light switches are in fact smoking quite a lot. That doesn't mean they are having cigarettes either. No, it means something screwed up! So anyway we turn off the power to the switches, turn off the switches...and let it sit a while. Jeff checked the emergency checklist for such an occasion, and we did everything right, the only missing component was that we didn't have sparks or flames thankfully.

Anyway that cut my flight short, so I was disappointed, cuz it was such a nice day! But on the way back we flew over Caledon East and my house, and that made me infinitely happy, haha. I didn't land today cuz Jeff was showing me proper approach etc etc and wanted me to get a better feel for what a correct landing procedure is, etc etc. Anyway tomorrow I get to do Stalls! For those who don't know, a stall is when the wing of an airplane is no longer aerodynamically capable of producing lift through a lack of airflow over the wing's surface, and thus, you fall like a rock unless you correct the issue. Anyway tomorrow Jeff is going to put the plane purposely into a stall and I have to correct it. It's fun stuff!

Toodles!

I just made a huge long post about my flights, and then blogger fucked up.

*sigh*
Suffice it to say that learning to fly is like learning to drive, with the same kind of nervousness and uncertainty. It's a LOT more fun with flying though. I've landed twice now (four times if you include the two times I did on my intro flight) and did okay with them. I landed halfway down the runway on both, which is how the Air France flight got done in...but happily my plane (Cessna 172P Skyhawk) can stop quickly. But yah, a lot of fun, I am learning a lot, and I am stupidly happy to be doing what I've dreamt about for eight years!

More later!

I should be in bed but I can't get to sleep. I guess two months of not having to get up early do that to one's sleeping schedule. Anyway tomorrow morning I start flight college after around eight years of waiting.

I am excited but its not the same kind of anxiousness one has for something like a vacation or even what we all felt for university or high school when it began. This is more like the first day of work for a career. If I even know what that feels like...this is about as close as I've come.

Oooookay. And I just read
this about a THIRD fire in Paris that has killed people.

Now...the first fire...probably an aog. The second fire...suspicious. While the third has not been in an immigrant housing development...seriously...does the word ARSON not exist in the French vocabulary??? Or how about FIRE ALARM?

I can understand why people are protesting there. I mean I am sure that fires happen in major cities all the time, but it seems highly suspicious that so many would happen all at once and kill large numbers of people like they have. Anyway, just drawing attention to this fact.

I just finished watching Gangs of New York on CBC. First of all, it makes me happy that I have a reason to watch the CBC still. I have the choice of a few hundred channels, and it makes me proud to think that I can watch Canadian television...as it broadcasts a typically proud American film. C'est la vie.

Anyway, Daniel Day-Lewis rocks. He is a damned good actor and does a damned good job in this film, wretching feelings of sympathy, hatred, misery and awe out of your ever-loving guts.

De-Craprio...well...I'll be honest, he's okay, better than I might expect anyway. But uh...the accent? Wtf? I mean he does a fantastic job of acting here, he really does, it's very raw, and seems primal, really inspired. But...his accent...it changes...ALL..THE..TIME. First he sounds like himself, then Irish, then English, then almost Scottish, then Irish, and then freaking English again. Maybe it's the way the accents were back then so you impress people or something but really, there was somethin wrong with that.

Cameron Diaz is...attractive...but forgettable.

The movie is awesome though. I just flat out loved it, it's supremely moving and powerful, and it ties together the various moral tales of the film wonderfully. Go see it!

And then I also saw Transporter 2 today. I remember the first being contrived, unrealistic even for an action film, lacking plotline, and having some of the most terrible lines in film history.

Part two...is no different...what - so - ever.

Frank Martin (A.k.a the Transporter, A.k.a Jason Statham):
"Flight's cancelled."
Gianni (A.k.a the badguy, A.k.a Alessandro Gassman):
"No, I regret to inform you that it is YOU that has been cancelled."

Okay so....the film did have ONE redeeming quality...and it is precisely that line above...for the line is in fact SO terrible, that it might be remembered as one of the most terrible lines in film history. Ergo, concordantly, irrelevantly, and most pertinantly - it is a funny thing to see for that line.

See what I just did there? I made fun of one terrible line by throwing in other terrible lines from the Matrix Reloaded. Which I still think is a terrible film.

Seeing the Mars Volta again was wicked, they just erupt on stage. System of a Down was fuct. Imma metal newb but it was easy getting into the beautiful absurdity that is system. My personal faves were when they played Cigaro and Violent Pornography. The crowd lost it when they played Toxicity and Aerials. Serj is a huge fucker.
Jennie has pics on her page.

September Concert Series
SEPT 1ST - System Of A Down with special guest the Mars Volta
SEPT 8TH - Esthero
SEPT 13TH - Blackalicious
SEPT 19TH - Pearl Jam
SEPT 27TH - George Clinton and Parliment-Funkadelic with friends Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrel and Children of Production

TOOORRRROONNNTTOO!!!

Just added the 27th today. Don't ask how an unemployed kid can afford all this, I'm still trying to figure it out myself. Everything is paid for until the 27th. Esthero is hookups and Pearl Jam is payment for a website. For everything else, there's MasterCard.

Job situation: I was promised a shipping/receiving job around here, I just have to submit my resume (one of Alberto's friends). EB hasn't called back, I'll call inquire if the position has been filled. I'm getting a little tired of my mother putting job postings on my desk for positions and responisibilities I have never even heard of. I found the style I want to use for the folio I'll be sending to employers. Here's a sketch I'm going to build content and motion around. Imma go on a graphic rampage until everything is out of my system.
