Just got back from a productive day at House70. Usually productive and House70 are two words seldom used in the same sentence. I think we did a good job today and deserve a pat on the back. We cleaned, vaccuumed, painted, donated, recycled, tossed, and ejected most of the dirty shit out of the house. Moving day is this Thursday and we are a determined bunch. Andy has radioed the MacKenzies for reinforcements, and Brad has recruited the Cales to help in the Western Front. There's still a bunch to do, but today's progress was a good motivating push.

Plans for Europe are also coming into fruition. It hasn't quite hit me yet but the anticipation is as strong as ever. Kinda like seeing the washroom sign in the mall after you've held your pee in through 5 stores. You're not quite in the urinal but you see the sign.

My room right now is cluttered with grad gifts and cards from my relatives from the BBQ. Thank you to the family and friends who came. If you weren't able to make it, we still have leftovers in the fridge and half a freezer full of fresh meat to fire up.

I am debating how to decorate my new found space. I have demoted my childhood toys into boxes such as my Pez collection and Winnie the Pooh water bottle. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures are still out to reflect the playful yet DANGEROUS personae that is drix. Everything else is barren at the moment. If the room is truly a reflection of self, then my empty room in transition cannot be more accurate. It is a clean slate to which I welcome change and new beginnings.

I just want to point out that Monday's
Penny Arcade is simply brilliant. It's simplicity is amazing, the art is awesome, and the joke is freaking hilarious. Oh my, such good times.

ARRRRRR-JAAYYYY

Saw RJD2 for the second time last night with Jo. Saw him about the same time last year at the same venue. His new material was intense and the crowd was bigger. People starting to take notice. The visuals worked this time and I recognized some of the imagery he put up. He used loops from
presstube, it was messed and went along with Someone's Second Kiss. He didn't sync them on purpose, but still wicckked.

Lee and LeSage came to York Region to add their Scarby flare to the area. Played ball (aka they played ball, I sucked it up), drank my parent's beer, got acquainted with the local buffet joint, and sassed the local hotties (they did all the sassing, I was a perfect gentleman). A fun play-date indeed.

Speaking of school, Miss Joyce made the coolest vid. It got me all teary eyed and pulled on my heartstrings. I've decided to go ahead and get the "CCIT 4 EVA" tattoo on my chest. It would have McLuhan's face on top with the text in Olde English right below it. A mean ass dragon would be in the background to put the fear of God of anyone who dare stare at the awesomeness of my chest.

Benny Luk is my hero. The guy is a graphic and motion designer in Hong Kong and has the sickest style. He's part of a studio called
sixstation. There's an undeniable beauty to his work. Check out the showcase section and see for yourself. I always visit his site and I am always left in awe.

I added him on MSN so I could harass the guy about his background and methods. I was surprised when he told me that the site had been around since 2000. Not surprising that a site can endure that long, but surprising that the content he created is that old. I've seen that kind of work for a while on the web, and you can see it slowly seeping into television graphics and show transitions(think MTV, G4TV). I understand that his work is based in Chinese calligraphy, and the shapes and lines are nothing new within oriental contexts, but the translation to screen and use of motion makes it captivating and new. Its like illustration meets abstraction meets motion.

He's for sure one of the originators of a style I love and attempt to emulate. I'll continue to harass him until he gives up all his secrets!

So I bought the new Foo Fighters and Coldplay, and here are my opinions of them both.

First the Foo Fighters! I really enjoy the new album. It has some really killer tracks on it, the title track being one of them. I knew that Best of You was amazing a month ago, I still stand by that. The rest of the heavy side of the album is recognizably Foo Fighters, and definitely has some highlights. But in all truth, it's not as mind-blowing as I thought it might be. Funnily enough, when I first started listening to the soft side, I thought it was awful, but then I listened more closely and really discovered how awesome it is.

What makes the whole album as a whole so fantastic IS the soft side of the album. The songs Over and Out, On the Mend, and Another Round are really awesome tracks. The opener and closer of that 'side' of the album - Still and Razor - are freaking fantastic. Still has got a sort of synthesized sound I've never heard from the Foos before. And Razor has got some of the most amazing acoustic work ever, it's just plain beautiful. He nailed the two on the head perfectly. So all in all, a really fantastic album. No Color and the Shape, but better than the past couple albums for sure. I recommend you get it if you can!

Funnily enough though, I couldn't copy it to my iPod because of the damn copyright protection, which pissed me off to no end because I know I'll listen to this in the car or with the Pod whilst walkin around. So the solution? Uninstall the driver device that makes the copy protection work on the computer and press shift when the CD pops in. Bingo, it now works without any problems, what a joke.

Anyway, Coldplay. Parachutes will never be beaten. I think that is a rule of physics, or on the periodic table of elements...it just cannot be topped by Coldplay. Accept that fact, and you will totally enjoy X&Y. I can't recall where I read it, but someone described it as being a more "sonic" album, which is very true. It seems to me to have less of the acoustic lil ditties - which is both good and bad. They've lost their folksie and rougher songs like Shiver and Spies, but made more stuff like High Speed and Clocks. So I am not really sure what I think. My four favourite Coldplay songs are represented in those titles, and they are split even.

On the new album, songs like Square One, Talk, White Shadows, X&Y, and Low just give me shivers listening to them because of the awesome atmosphere they create. The balads, like Fix You and What If, are also really good. Actually Fix You is a real shocker, it starts out with an organ of all instruments, and seems to be really, really slow and dull. But then about 2/3rds of the way through the song, an AWESOME guitar riff kicks in and the song explodes into something amazing, I am really glad I took the time to try and enjoy it all instead of being an idiot and skipping it.

Anyway, I'd argue this album is just as good as A Rush of Blood to the Head, maybe even better because I feel the album is much more consistently good. However, it doesn't have as many GREAT songs like the past albums. This is it's one weakness...lots of good songs, not so many great ones. But I still love it.

So there you have it everyone, my opinions of my two most recently purchased albums. What will I review next time? Probably Sam Roberts if he ever decides to release the damned thing. And then Depeche Mode later on. Deftones will be around there somewhere too. What an awesome year for music.

last night a bunch of us went to see Batman Begins in Imax. i gotta say, i was expecting an "okay" movie. instead i was blown away. my only main beefs include, the fact that i didn't think Ra's Al Ghul should be able to stand against Batman in hand to hand combat. And they kinda skipped over how they solved part of the end crisis. but it you can except that it was dealt with off camera.

but wow, when Scarecrow hallucinates and sees Batman, it was impressive.

the movie was just awesome.

I have made a lot of posts lately. Anyway, I got the new Finch album today. I haven't finished listening to it all yet...but yah...I like it. I suppose I am not surprised, What It Is To Burn is an amazing album and one of my favourites from 2002.

Say Hello to Sunshine is an altogether different experience from What It Is to Burn, however. This isn't a bad thing at all. Their sound is vastly different on this album, much rougher and darker. The compositions don't seem as complicated either. The vocals in particular are very different - they sound unleashed and less forced. A Man Alone stands out in my mind as a really interesting leap in terms of where their music is going. It makes me think of rockabilly, hardcore, with a dash of debut album Finch.

Anyway, I like the album a lot so far, I suggest you all find it. Wait for Tuesday to hear what I think of new Coldplay and Foo Fighters. I know Coldplay was out last week...buttt I just didn't bother to get it yet.

It has been and will continue to be an interesting few days.

After no sleep, I spent half the day moving all my gear back to my parent's house. Everything would have fit for a single trip, minus the fact that I forgot to pack my suit and and half my room. Nat came by, we gave eachother daps (a variation of props), then I went on my way. Send bye to Tracey. I'll be back at 70 to clean and throw out everything else I've forgotten.

First thing I'm going to unpack are my earbuds. I gurauntee I'll set off my parents primal screams while they slowly adjust back to my odd behaviour. I also have the feeling my vocabulary of Filipino expletives will grow exponentially. I love them.

Convocation tomorrow, Wooot with a capital W. I'm fearing the heat, but I won't complain cuz I spent all winter wishing and waiting for the summer. Imma summer kid and will cope with cold brews and hot summer chickitas.

D-D-D-D-D-D-D-Dhat's all folks.

RAGING ALCOHOLIC BOY DRUNK REPORT: SPECIAL WEEKEND EDITION

So as most readers of this blog will know (cuz you were there), this weekend was quite the party for H77. First on Friday night, MacKenzie Industries CEO Andrew MacKenzie, freelance graphic design artist DJ Drixx, and pilot-in-training Paul Day, along with the lovely ladies of McCaul Street, and many others, went out for an unbearably hot evening out at the Green Room. A very enjoyable establishment to say the least, despite the lack of very cold beer, and awful, awful nachos (maybe explaining why they cost half as much as most do). But yah, awesome times to catch up with everyone.

Highlights included Jessica's hummous, Andy and I nearly dying from our first beer which we chugged, cell phones forced into coitus, and the return of the ever-wonderful Ms.Sargent!

At the end of the night I stumbled back to the gracious Mr. Jesse Few and Mr. Colin Parker's abode. Which was an oven, as I have previously stated.

Saturday for me had a couple of really great meals on Bloor near Christie, at Tasty's and Clintons. Both great places, with good service and wonderful food, I recommend both for pub fare. Then Jesse and I went to see Mr. And Mrs. Smith, a highly entertaining film, not one to be taken too seriously, but entertaining nonetheless - although the ending did suffer from a relative lack the aforementioned "ending", or in other words - no closure or resolution.

Then we all went to the Dance Cave. I must admit I was a Dance Cave virgin, but I was highly impressed. Great, GREAT music including the original song that is a part of the electronica remix album that Piotr gave H77 and which we've all been quite obsessed with lately. They also played some Canned Heat, New Order, and on Shanron's request, Love and Rockets. For that evening, Mr. Bradley Cale, philosopher and poet-punk, and J.Lo came out to meet us. So it was a party. We played some fun pool, we danced like idiots, drank tons, and had an amazing time.

Anyway, all in all, a huge highlight of this summer will for sure be this weekend. Onward to convocation tomorrow, and the bidding farewell of Andy Sargent again (only for a while, we all hope). On the bright side, so long as she goes away, that means she comes back, and when she does - we seem to have very good weekends, so I welcome that.

And now - I sleep. Oh sweet SWEET sleep. ...stupid oven-like Jesse's...(which I am infinitely grafeful to have been able to sleep in)

I really should read
Fark far more often. This is a really, really cool story about a mentally challenged high school student playing in the last basketball game of his senior year. I think that it's really, really freaking awesome, please read it. What is really amazing about the story is how the opposing team fouled him purposely so he would get the chance to shoot, that is just fantastic that high school students would be able to put away pride and help someone who has a tough run at life get a really touching moment. Anyway, read it!

So for all of those who want to know what it's like to sleep in Jesse's house during one of the hottest weeks of the summer, here is a little description.

Imagine being in an oven. But not just any oven. An oven designed to bake Earth. In fact, scratch that, imagine an oven that contains the Sun itself, and reflects all the energy of the sun back onto the sun. Imagine the flames, the thousand degree temperatures, the utter, relentless, unbearable and absolute power and heat that the sun can produce.

Now imagine that in a space a little smaller than the main floor of House 70. Also imagine no fans. The windows are ALL WIDE OPEN. But no air gets in. Nay, for nothing can escape. I am not even joking, I went outside just now, I can honestly, and probably truthfully say that it is up to fifteen degrees cooler outside. Maybe even more. I have never in my entire life experienced the hellish heat this place is producing. It's absolutely absurd. How the HELL does a house get this fucking hot????

Now - normally I would never use MuchMusic as a source of my music news. Butttt for once they have shown me the light.

Maybe some of you knew this, I didn't. But yah, K-Os is gonna be on the new Broken Social Scene album...or one of them anyway.
Chartattack would suggest there are in fact three new BSS albums coming our way. Absolutely insane.

In other news - anyone wanna go freaking see them with Modest Mouse, Metric et al on the 26th? I am damned tempted. Olympic Island again too - Andy will happily profess his love for that venus as will I. Good times are had there.

Good LORD. Foo Fighters are playing at Lee's Palace on June 16th. I am downright excited about their new album from the single they've released. And after seeing them last year I've really been itching to see them again. I just have no idea when the tickets go on sale or if you have to win them....if one does have to win them via the Inside Edge - then Andy you know what you have to do.
