thank god
someone is finally standing up to the RIAA's ridiculous pray and spray suing policy. it's nice to see a label stand up and say "actually, you DON'T represent any of our artists or their interests". hopefully this can actually rally some real support.

i am so terribly terribly afriad. somehow i see some idiotic tv exec thinking that american idol is the perfect format for electoral reform.

it just makes me shiver.

i think everyone involved with "reality" television needs to be culled from the industry immediately.

I just finished watching the Constant Gardener. I have to say that the film is really very excellent. Some people criticize it for its discontinuous timeline but I think it emphasizes the loneliness and sense of being lost that Ralph Fiennes' character must feel in the latter half of the film (I assure you that spoils nothing of the story). The story is very powerful, and I thought the acting was top notch by all involved. Probably why Rachel Weisz got an Oscar nomination - though to be fair I thought that Ralph Fiennes did a bloody fantastic job. He nailed the characteristics (in my opinion) of a relatively shy British upper crust government representative whose humble civility is eventually eroded away into someone driven by passion, anger and determination.

Why on earth the film hasn't recieved more accolades from the Oscar nominations is beyond me though. I mean, I adore Crash, and was ecstatic to see it nominated for best picture. Of the other four nominations I've only seen Munich. That being said, I am pretty sure that the other three I haven't seen are all very deserving - and yet I don't feel that Munich was any better than The Constant Gardener at ALL. Munich was a great film, don't get me wrong - but it didn't grip me nearly as powerfully as The Constant Gardener does. It's just further proof, in my mind, that it's all about stupid film politics. Why does Munich get a nomination when The Constant Gardener does not? Because Steven Spielberg put his might behind Munich, and people see him as being a big deal. It's the same B.S that happened last year with Million Dollar Baby, or the year BEFORE with Mystic River. They are good films, but easily beat out the others put forward (again this is all just opinion so don't get all bunched up in a knot on me), and the reason they won is because Clint Eastwood made them, and he is Hollywood's baby.

Anyway, just my two cents. Go see Constant Gardener, Munich, Crash, and all the rest and see for yourself!

My week has also been an interesting one. Two days of superb flying weather has afforded me the opportunity to finally accomplish two parts of my training which I'd been waiting for since sometime late in November.

I flew to St.Catharine's solo yesterday at long last. I did pretty well, had little or no trouble with the air traffic controller (although I had NO idea where the squawk ident button was cuz it wasn't labelled...I seriously pressed randomly until the ATC said "Thanks"), and had an awesome time doing it.

Then this morning I woke up early and discovered the weather was AGAIN amazing. So I flew first to London (Ontario), then to Brantford. So I logged around 4.2 hours and travelled about 450km in the space of about two days. That is more than I flew in the whole of the rest of January. But on the bright side (literally) this means that if I get three or four good days next week (doesn't have to be great like today, just good) I could do my practice runs for my private licence and then do my actual flight test. If all goes well that means I could at last be licenced to fly you folk next week or the week after!

It's about bloody time. Stupid Smarch weather (I hearby dub Smarch the period from October to February).

What a week, what a week. So many things keep me from typing about work. Fear of supervisors and coworkers reading my thoughts, confidentiality agreements, not giving in to the inner pussy that bitches about everything. I'm pretty sure my supervisor could give two shits about what I think, but still.

Elevator chit chat with the full timers are pretty funny. I like it when they give me wisdom on how to cope, "If you ever decide to make a career out of this place, grab a knife and stab yourself." I put it on a post-it and stuck it on my monitor so I wouldn't forget.

I'm going to buy a
plant to brighten up my cube. I'll name it Freedom and water it everyday.

Maybe post some pictures of Mario and co. on my walls and call it the Game Cubicle.

The term daily grind has completely changed it's meaning.

Right now BB is lifting me up.

And here's the biggest disadvantage: If you take these assignments, you may get lazy about your job search. It is very easy to get comfortable in your temporary environment, and it's very hard to spend hours after work searching job sites and polishing your resume. Avoid this trap by remaining constantly aware that this is a temporary situation, not a permanent solution to your quest for a satisfying career.

So I am sure many of you have seen the new episodes of 24. Interesting developments going on with
Samwise Gamgee showing up to save Jack Bauer's ass.

That being said - seriously, toxic gas AGAIN? They REALLY need to come up with new ways to commit mass murder. It's always either nukes, or toxins. Or nuclear toxins. Or toxic nukes. Or...well...you get the idea. Seriously, there are other ways to kill people. With the introduction of Samwise, maybe the plot eventually builds to Jack finding and destroying the one ring that rules them all! And he has to duke it out fisticuffs style with a nazgul!

One can only hope.

Either that, or it turns out that all of this is a plot of Jack Bauer himself, and Chuck Norris comes and roundhouse kicks Jack to the face to save Earth from Jack and his evil nazgul minions.

So happy birthday to Mr.Cale! Last night at Finn's was definitely an all right time. Like Allan and I were saying - alcohol makes any location fun. And Golden Griddle at 3am is a very, very good idea. I prefer the Eggs Benedict to Brad's choice of Bacon, though honestly either one is a good decision.

I hope the day is treating Brad better than it is me though...I came out to get my car this morning on Queen to find that someone had sideswiped it, denting and scraping the front quarter of the bodywork, ripping apart the hubcap, and ripping off my side-view mirror. That mirror is the same one my mom busted off on my birthday. I reported it to the police and such cuz first of all I might need to claim it for insurance...also it's pretty clear that whoever hit my car was drunk, and in a van. I found the van's runningboard and mirror casing which was from the drivers side - meaning the fool must have crossed into the oncoming lane to hit my car. Oh, and the car in front of me as well. Like I said, drunk. Oh well, a nuisance...with any luck no one was hurt.

So it's been a while since any of us have posted. Figured I'd make a quick one. Couple things to mention. One, is I read the Da Vinci Code at last. I know, I'm slow to pick up on interesting cultural stuff like that. Anyway it's pretty cool, if you haven't already read it, I highly suggest you give it a look. It's damnably impossibly to put down once you start. I read it in two nights and am paying for it now cuz I'm exhausted. But it's really worth the read, the mystery and religious intrigue are really fascinating to learn about (even if a large majority of the facts Brown claims are true are in fact false - Prior of Scion was invented by some French looney who wanted to be famous in the 60s) and its fantastically well written.

Also, I bought the City and Colour album off iTunes. For those who don't know, City and Colour is essentially just Dallas Green, the guitarist/singer for Alexisonfire. Anyway the album is essentially acoustic, with a few embelishes of drums and synths peppering a couple of the songs. I really like the album a lot. It has got a lot of textured music that is really beautiful. He can definitely sing if he puts himself to it. I recommend you pick it up or download it or whatever, as it really is super.

2006 is off to a rocky start. Haha no this isn't me blubbering over a
girl or a job. Without making this a cry for help, Imma just say this year will be an interesting one. Good times.

Paul, your shit list is indeed shit. I wanted to kill myself when I was watching State of the Union. Mandatory explosions and hot female actresses kept me alive long enough to finish it. What a waste of two hours.

PS. If you want to see a shitty movie go and rent Immortal: Ad Vitam. It wasn't worth the pirated DVD I watched it on. You know how some movies attempt to blend CG and live action? They fail miserably. Even before the shitty CG, the story wasn't strong enough to justify its saturated look. I give it -77 stars out of 5.

The sun goes up the sun goes down
I drag myself into the town
All I do I wanna to do with you
Everyday I'm at my desk
At my desk I'm like the rest
All I do I wanna to do with you
The sun goes up.

So, in the new year, I've decided to look back at the old year, and it's films. Last year, was, on the whole, crap. Despite some good flicks such as Sin City, Batman Begins, Star Wars Episode III (I suppose....), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and Cinderella Man, I was pretty unimpressed with the majority of the films released this year. Don't believe me? Let some of these titles refresh your memory....

Elektra, House of Wax, The Pacifier, Stealth, Flightplan, xXx: State of the Union, Transporter 2 *shudder*, Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous, Get Rich or Die Tryin', Herbie: Fully Loaded, Son of the Mask, Deuce Bibalow: European Gigalo, Are We There Yet?.

Right...so again, whilst there were SOME good films...the majority was utter crap, as it is with any year, I guess, but this year stands out in my mind. No wonder Hollywood is so paranoid about illegal downloads of their films - they make such poor sales on their current batch that they need every penny they can get to stay afloat...

So Happy New Beers folks.
I was with Mr.MacKenzie and Ms.Godfrey, as well as a plethora of drunk Ottawa citizens at a kegger for New Years. Good times had by all. Possibly the most by Mr. and Mrs.MacKenzie, if Cip's claims are true. Flying WestJet rules, the legroom is plentiful, the service is short and sweet, and their planes are shiny and new. And have Satellite TV, not that I would pay for that, which you do.

G drank a lot of Whiskey. A LOT of Whiskey.

In other news, I haven't flown in nearly three weeks. It's becoming pretty depressing. The weather has been the worst for the past three months. The one good sunny week we did have, I barely flew because of a variety of dumb reasons. It's frustrating as hell, and the coming week looks awful too. Guess I'll just play more video games! If I didn't have the 360 right now, I think I'd start to go insane.

Anyway, happy New Years again, and I hope you had kickass times.
