Lost in translation, scroll down.

I need a refresher course in memory. I'm deciding which upgrades I can make to extend the life of the dog. I know she's old and giving her a botox injection ain't gonna turn back the clock. As loving pet owner I have to try something to save her life.

My motherboard is an A7V333 and supports PC2700 - DDR333 memory. I am wondering what will happen if I shove a newer stick inside the dog. Does it have to be PC2700? Will it recognize DDR400/433/466/500 and run it at 333? Or will it run at all?

I have decided on getting other parts that can be carried over, but am in a pickle figuring out what to do about my SDRAM.

I hope someone can resolve my quandary. If not, the only trick this old dog is gonna learn is how to play dead... :( Fuck you progress.

haha, I just finished watching Memoirs of a Geisha. Anyone else think it's funny that the producers of the film decided to pass off a Chinese actress (Ziyi Zhang) as a Japanese geisha? For that matter, a large number of the cast is Chinese, rather than Japanese - Michelle Yeoh (Malaysian with Chinese descent) Li Gong, Kenneth Tsang, etc etc. It's been brought up on IMDB forums too, and a lot of people are being ignorant and claiming the "they all look alike" which is total BS.

Anyway, I just find it funny that the lead character, who is a Geisha, and I assume therefore Japanese (I haven't read the book - someone let me know if the character is actually a Chinese woman who becomes a Japanese Geisha), is played by a Chinese woman, and the producers think they can get away with that without people commenting on it.

I just finished watching Terry Gilliam's Brazil for the first time. Not much to say beyond it blew me away. The genius of this film works on so many levels I'd never be able to even begin to describe why.

Just see the movie. Then fill out forms 27 - 6, signed in triplicate, and get back to me and I'll redirect you to the proper department to get the proper set of forms for further opinion on the film.

Watch it and understand.

Its a chilling Sunday afternoon. Nothing to report in particular except I'm hungry. Imma find some foodeds after this I guess. But first I would like to talk about the deals I found recently.

DealZzz!!!

Found
Biodome, Flight of the Navigator, and It, for low low prices. Like $4 low (no this was not at Pacific Mall and or Spadina). Wal-mart.

For some reason the kid at Grey Region comic shop sells me books at American prices. It happened twice already. So I've saved like $5 on the Runaways vol.3 & vol4. I am happily confused.

Found a place that will add a toggle switch to my guitar. It basically dumbs down your 3-way toggle and cuts the signal from your pickups, acting sorta like a on/off switch. You know the scratching on Bulls on Parade? The intro to Know Your Enemy? Those were made possible by the toggle and the genius of Morello. This is him using it. The guy can either rewire the existing connections for $50, but as a consequence I will lose my low-mid tones. I can have him add a new hole with the switch upping the cost to $100, but I'd still be able to use the tone knob normally.

Right now I can only think of a handful of times I'd use it. Its like a spoiler on a car, and can be likened to the nipple tassles on a stripper. Do I need it? Not really, but its fucking cool and will add to the sick aesthetic of my Ebony replica.

I just had to ask for a solo flight didn't I? So today I finally got up. Was super happy to be going up on my own. I did all my pre-engine start checks, post-engine start checks, pre-take off checks, and runway checks. I take off, and do one circuit of the runway. I land, and see a Cessna 152 do a touch and go, a Cessna 172 do the same, and a Piper Seminole twin engine do a touch and go as well. I take off behind the Seminole.

I perform my circuit as I've been trained. I climb to 1400ft ASL and make my crosswind turn. I hear radio chatter from the 152, the 172, and from two helicopters doing training to the East of the airport. The 152 makes a call turning base. I turn downwind and make my radio call. Ahead of me the 172 makes a turn onto base and makes his call. More chatter from the helicopters. I do my pre-landing checks. Primer locked, master and Mags on, lights on, carb heat hot, mixture rich, fuel on both. I throttle down when parallel to the threshold of runway 33. I see the 172 on final, hear his call, and put down 20 degrees of flap once the airspeed has dropped below 85 knots. Once he's parallel to my wing, I turn left, and make my call for base. "Brampton Traffic this is Hotel Sierra Kilo turning base runway 3-3 full stop." I check my altitude and speed, approaching at 65 knots, and I seem a bit high, I pull back on the throttle a touch to adjust.

Then all hell breaks loose.

"HOTEL SIERRA KILO this is Papa Sierra Kilo we are IMMEDIATELY to your right do you have us??"

*ahem* Imagine all the alarms. Bells. Whistles. Horns. Drums. Beeping. Flashing. My mind is currently in overload thinking "Wait...WHERE did he say he was?" I look behind to my right. No plane. I didn't hear anyone call base. Where the hell is he. I sweep back to the nose to make sure I am still straight and level.

Oh god. He is there. RIGHT THERE. It's the Twin. Doing a steep bank to the right. It's about 200ft away from me. I swerve the plane to the right..."wait..no...left, go left left left" Holy crap holy crap holy crap.

So about three quarters of an hour later I'm down, after doing a few more circuits after that. I am walking to the front desk and my flight instructor is coming towards me with a smile. I yell to him "Jeff! Who was just flying Papa Sierra Kilo???" He laughs to me and says "Yah you cut me off."

Turns out he got his student to do a simulated engine failure. Course, on a twin engine plane you can cut out one engine and run on the other. So he was flying the circuit normally - but forgot his radio calls, or at least didn't make his call for Final. As a consequence I never expected to see him there - even though I should have - cuz it was the twin that did the touch and go in front of me. Anyway...Jeff laughed it off. I wasn't too shaken up. I was just worried I'd get in trouble, but it's all good. And I have learned to keep a much keener eye out...and immediately after the incident, the student pilot learned to keep much better tabs on his radio calls.

Soooo...my birthday was on September 28th. That was the first time I soloed. Since then, I have soloed twice. And in fact, since October BEGAN, I have flown maybe five times. The whole of last week, the cloud was too low. This week - the cloud is nice and high...and so are the winds. And so I managed to do my third solo on Monday. This also, thankfully, provided me with my solo release. Which means I don't have to have an instructor to fly shotgun on my first couple circuits - I can just go straight up by myself now. And yet - I have not had the chance cuz of shitty weather. If tomorrow doesn't cooperate - I'm gonna petition that Mother Nature be replaced by Daddy Environment cuz Mother Nature is clearly PMSing something wicked right now.

That being said - the day there is good weather, I am gonna fucking rip the sky a new one for like four hours straight. It'll cost be something like 500$, but fuck will it ever be worth it.

Nothing like getting locked out of your house for a third time to get the blood boiling. Yes I have keys, but they decide to leave the screen door locked, making the only way in through the fucking garage. I got locked out for six hours like a month ago, I fell asleep in the backyard to pass the time. I walked around with a sharpie to kill time tonight. I am fucking breaking my window the next time it happens. I think I'd be fully justified.

Jobby is pretty chill. I'm going to buy a lot of shit when that first pay finally gets it's fat ass through the door. I hear the more shit you buy the happier you'll be. I forgot to fill in one bloody box and direct deposit decides to take a detour through the mail. Indirect deposit, direct nuisance.

Going along with Brad's movie posts, I have seen a couple new ones in the past few days, both good and...well not bad...but...just...different.
Gram wrote about the different one - A History of Violence - the other day. I think he was pretty much on the ball with his analysis, you definitely find yourself desperately involved wondering what is going on with the lives of the characters, and back-story is important.

My only dilemma is the lack of closure to it. Graham failed to mention that while one major plot point is resolved (we as the audience assume anyway), another more glaring one which the audience is probably more interested in is not resolved, and left open for speculation. While I normally applaud this, I find that Cronenberg left the film too open for the film to be truly gripping. Anyway just download it and enjoy.

The other flick I saw was Lord of War. I can't say enough good things about this movie. The acting is downright awful in most instances, but the film is ridiculously compelling and tackles an interesting subject that often isn't dealt with in film or even in the news. The convoluted politics of the world and the horrid way in which laws can be circumvented is both terrifying and fascinating. My criticsms come in the shape of acting courtesy of Bridget Moynahan, Jared Leto, and Nick Cage. So pretty the entire main cast, haha. They are weak performances that are carried by a good script and plot. Also, at the beginning and the end are these weird kind of fourth wall performances by Nick Cage that I'm not entirely happy with. But otherwise I suggest seeing it, it's quite powerful!

Meantime, I have a new satellite system to enjoy! Mmmm Dolby digital.

jenny and i went to see
Domino last night. it's a Tony Scott film. it's quite clear the guy loves playing with titling. if you've seen Man on Fire, then you'll know what i mean. the movie was definitely enjoyable, but several moments stuck out to me. the one that annoyed me the most was how shocked the FBI agents were that the money exchange near the end gets all crazy and out of control, even though they were the ones that purposefully manipulated the mafia guys into busting in to shoot everyone. like really, what did they expect?

some people might think the film has too much style. i guess i might have been close to that, but i still found it very easy to follow and entertaining. so it's certainly not the best film of the year. but keira knightly is hot, and lots of people get shot. so that's cool. check it out.

Muahahahahaha. MUAHAHAHAHA. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Okay. Seriously. 253mph. Some 407km/h. 219 Knots. ONE HUNDRED THIRTEEN METERS PER SECOND!!!! MACH 0.33!!!! Bugatti have produced the world's fastest production car. I'd also like to point out that speed achieves the same kind of performance as an F1 race car. In some cases - better. Only sets you back about $1.2 million U.S too! And it doesn't look half bad either - at least compared to the Enzo. haha wowwww.

All meteorology and no flying make Paul a dull boy.
All meteorology and no flying make Paul a dull boy.
All meteorology and no flying make Paul a dull boy.

Heeeeeree's boredom!

Seriously people. By next week I was hoping to fly my first cross-country flight. And instead, I have spent my third day feeling literally under the weather. Or rather - I CAN'T get out from under it. Stupid clouds. They have been getting lower and lower every day. I can't even fly a circuit cuz they are so low. What's worse is I am studying meteorology each morning for our ground school. So we get to learn about how we are stuck. As fellow student Brock put it - "The only reason I can stand ground classes is because I know I get to fly after." And yet...we haven't. I haven't since last Friday. Kind of defeats the purpose of FLYING school. BAH!!!!!

In the meantime, I am very happy to boast that I am going to see
Depeche Mode on December 1st for the first time since the Singles Tour when they came to Toronto on November 5th, 1998. That is a freaking long time! So I am excited. Ms.Godfrey will be joining me as well as her sister and sister's friend.

I downloaded the newest album, called Playing the Angel. I'll give a more concise opinion once I've listened to it all. But I like what I hear so far. Has a neat modern industrial sound to it, which is funny because they were originators in that genre and yet I'd never really call their albums since the mid-eighties as being industrial, so they seem to be going back to it.

Anyway, hopefully next week weather will be better. God how I hope it will be better.

Eric, Brad, it makes absolute sense! Long story short, I got a free bus ticket plus some spending cash.

NYC was hype! I went around during the day and couldn't help but feel grumpy from my 6am wake up call. I was there too short of a time to really let it sink in. Despite what I've been told, the New Yorkers have a great disposition.

Resting in Baltimore right now (I think... actually fuck, I'm in Pencil-Vania, dinner was in Baltimore). It was also long day in Philadalphia and Washington where I visited all the sights. The monuments were monumental for sure. I picked up a pack of those Iraqi most wanted playing cards from a dude at the Vietnam Veterns Memorial. I also saw dinosaurs at the Museum of Natural History. My boys Steggy and Rex were chilling there. Hahaha they're so clever, they called the gift shop, TriceraSHOP! Hahaha genius.

I was up $100 from roulette at Atlantic City yesterday. The Taj treated me nice. I got greedy and ended up with $40. I was like 77% right on calling the colours. RED! BLACK! BLACK! RED! A lady at the table was nice enough to show me the ropes. Its not a gambling problem if you're winning! I could have won more but I would have missed the bus in the morning... fuck these wake up calls. The boardwalk was amazing and would be a wicked place to take your girl.

Tomorrow I'll be back to reclaim my thrown on Richmond Hill. Four days without my tyranny is much too long.
