HOUSE 77 VERSION 2.2

This place is kinda dead lately huh? Hopefully a couple people will read it.

So I watched the Departed just now. Meh...it is the same as Infernal Affairs parts 1, 2 and 3 except for some knit-picked details. The basic plot is the same. Bad-guy pretends to be good-guy, good-guy pretends to be bad-guy. For those who may not know - the film is in fact BASED on Infernal Affairs, a Hong Kong flick with the same plot-points save for again a few minor details. Also The Departed tries to fit parts one and two into one film. Part three of Infernal Affairs is after the main plotline.

ANYWAY...I liked the film. I liked it a lot, the same way I liked Infernal Affairs. The plot is EXTREMELY well planned. The script is well executed by ALL actors - especially DiCaprio (who I normally really don't like save for the Aviator) The direction is fantastic - better than the original Chinese film. I'd easily call it one of the best films of 2006.

But I have this continually nagging voice in the back of my head saying "you've seen this before." And I have - granted I had to read subtitles to understand Infernal Affairs - but Infernal Affairs was no less of a film, and it has originality. That being said, Star Wars steals elements from other films. The Matrix is said to borrow certain concepts from anime like Ghost in the Shell or other sci-fi flicks like Dark City. There are lots of cases of modern remakes of older classic films like Oceans Eleven, The Ladykillers, King Kong (two times no less!). Hollywood often remakes films. But the thing that bugs me is that it is one thing to introduce a film to a generation who never had the chance to see a film when they were younger. I mean in the case of King Kong's original remake in the 70s - it had been 43 years since the original was made. That is a lot of people who had never seen it. And so the film made it accessible to them.

Buuuuut The Departed came out four years after the original Infernal Affairs. And three years after the finale of the trilogy. So I guess I just find it a shame that while The Departed is getting a huge amount of praise (as it should - it is a great film in every respect - be it acting, direction, cinematography or script), Infernal Affairs isn't getting the respect it should considering it is also an excellent film. So I encourage you to find the Infernal Affairs trilogy and watch that as well if you see the Departed to see what it was based on.

Finally...all I know is that if this film gets Martin Scorsese a freaking Oscar for best director...I'll be happy.

And so the series continues of....
****HOW MY XBOX 360 GOT THREE RED LIGHTS OF DEATH BECAUSE OF A SOFTWARE UPDATE , AND NOW I HAVE TO SEND IT IN TO BE REPAIRED AT A COST I DON'T WANT TO CONTEMPLATE.****

So I know what the cost I contemplated was.

I called in right at 9am, dealt with the minefield of shitty "Please state what you need help with" electronic menu, and got through to an operator. I gave them the reference number. I told them that moving my XBox to a better ventilated spot obviously did nothing to help. They asked me if I'd tried with and without the hard drive. Yes. They asked if my power bar was green on bootup and yellow when off. Yes. They asked if I wanted it sent in. Yes. I asked if I could buy the extended waranty similarly to when I purchased my original Xbox. No, and it falls outside of its warranty period. Hrmm. How much is the repair?

ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY US DOLLARS??? sadhflkdsfds

I got pissed. I mean REALLY pissed.

"Wait. You told me I have a ventilation problem. I told you guys that I don't because it's sat there for an entire bloody year. I told you that IMMEDIATELY after installing YOUR bloody update on MY machine, MY machine CRASHED, and CONTINUES to crash. You are telling me that because of YOUR bloody update and MISTAKE the cost of repairing MY machine falls on MY SHOULDERS? How can I POSSIBLY be held responsible for that?"

"......"

"Mr.Day (I might add she called me Paul up until that point) I am sorry let me just check something for you."

*cue in On Hold music for a couple minutes* About two minutes in she came in saying she was sorry for the wait and if I minded holding a bit longer. I obliged.

"Mr.Day it appears as though Microsoft has extended the warranty to a full year on all Xbox 360s, your Xbox is covered for repairs free of charge."

Here is the funny part. I bought my Xbox sometime in December. It is now January. Uhm...whatever, I don't care. I am not being charged.

Now...with all that being said - to the woman who helped me out, I am REALLY sorry I bitched you out. You just started your day, and I probably put you in a sour mood. I am sorry for that. But I wanted my 140 USD in my own wallet, and not a $1000 paperweight.

Also - I keep my hard drive. So I am happy now. I am just so on edge about my property because of the whole fiasco from Canon. Not to mention this is the second time I've had to send in an Xbox.

This post starts a new series on House 77, with it I will bring you in depth and up to date coverage of something very dear to me, something which since last December I have been very close to, and spent hours of enjoyment with...

And so begins the series of....

****HOW MY XBOX 360 GOT THREE RED LIGHTS OF DEATH BECAUSE OF A SOFTWARE UPDATE, AND NOW I HAVE TO SEND IT IN TO BE REPAIRED AT A COST I DON'T WANT TO CONTEMPLATE.****

Yah. That's right. I basically now have a $1000 paperweight. The other day (Wednesday, January 10th, 2007) I signed in to play some Rainbow Six: Vegas. It said there was an update to be installed. Strangely enough, I felt wary about it because I hadn't heard of this update. But whatever, it's probably for some kind of software edit, no biggie. I installed it. Then I go to play Vegas andddd SCREEEECH. The screen freezes when I was loading up a single player game. Odd. I turn off the box, and try again. This time it freezes in the menu. Then it froze in the game. Then as it booted up. And then and then and then...and then it showed me the three red lights of death. Super.

So I tried what it suggested online to solve such an issue. It did absolutely nothing. I called Microsoft...went through a huge long process of getting to an actual PERSON to talk to. They told me to do the same bullshit it mentioned online. Absolutely useless. They then asked me if I had it near any other items. Yah I do - my desk and my computer. "Oh well you should keep it at least a foot away for ventilation. Try that and call us back." ...it sat...in that spot...for A YEAR!!!!!! Through the bloody hot summer, through hell and high-water. It makes NO sense that SUDDENLY after a freaking software update EVERYTHING would go to hell.

So now I have to call them, find out if I can buy the extended warranty, and then ship the damn thing off to get replaced. What is the best part? I will undoubtedly lose all of my downloaded content and saves. Super. Super fucking dandy. I can't even boot the thing up to save my stuff to a memory card.

Jessica has her airline ticket now. For those who don't know, Jessica is my girlfriend who lives in Malaysia, yes we met online, no we've never met. She arrives February 8th, and leaves February 24th. The weekend of the ninth is when Andy plans to celebrate his birthday, so I will try to get her out for that so you can all meet her. Then the following weekend we'll also arrange some nights at the bar/pub/club/whatever. I encourage you all to come out and meet her!

In other news, I have two tickets for the Explosions in the Sky show at the Opera House on March 24th, which is a Saturday and starts at 8:30. If anyone is interested in coming let me know, as other than Jesse - who is still in Ireland - I know of no real fans of the band.
